On 2nd February, 1915, the 12th London battalion joined 84 Brigade, 28th Division and six days later they found themselves in Ypres providing carrying parties, taking supplies and rations to the front line. These activities usually took place at night and were often very dangerous. Harassing artillery and machine-gun fire from the enemy would be kept up intermittently throughout the night designed to disrupt the work as much as possible. Tracks along which carrying parties had to travel to reach the front line were known to the German gunners and targeted accordingly. Many a soldier met his death while part of a carrying party.

This was certainly what happened to Ernest Jones during the night of 9/10th February. The battalion diary recorded that he did not return from a carrying party taking sandbags to Chateau de Ville.
